Since 2018, I've documented wild love stories from engagements, elopements, and weddings all around the Northwest.
We all need a little extra guidance especially when it comes to big things like your engagement photo outfits. This isn’t about helping you dress to match trends or stand out, it’s designed to help you choose outfits that reflect who you are while giving your engagement photographer room to create photos that feel more like art than snapshots. You’ll be able to apply what you learn from this guide to help you choose the best outfits for your engagement photo outfits so your photos reflect your connection and feel timeless.
Location has a big part of your engagement photo outfits. If your location is somewhere in the mountains, chances are you are going to have a forest, and a mountain back drop. This ind of scenery could be considered “busy”, so as the subject and main focus of the photo you might want to choose outfits that are less busy and more solid colors with a little texture.
For another example, if you are at the beach, your back ground will be the sand and ocean. Really you are only looking at two colors in the back ground. Here you could play with colors and textures. It’s important to remember that you, your partner, and your connection is the main focus of the photo, so choose colors and patterns that wont take away from that.
Choosing colors that either compliment or stand out from the environment’s tones and colors are super important to eliminate distractions so we can focus on the emotion. I typically recommend people lean towards neutrals and muted colors as they are typically what will be the most timeless and offer minimal distraction. Stay away from colors that can cast unnatural colors onto your partner’s skin. These colors are typically fluorescents, but specifically pink, bright red, orange, and yellow will cast the strongest. This makes it pretty difficult when editing, so be sure to ask them to steer clear of these.
When considering your patterns and textures, I always suggest that only one person wears a pattern while the other couple wears something more simple or solid color. Combining patters can be tricky, so make sure that the patters in your engagement photo outfits are fighting with the location.
Good examples of patters: Flannels
Bad example: Chevron or thick strips
I strongly encourage meaningful props, like your doggo or something you and your partner love: maybe thats a drink or a smoke! Anything that might reflect the both of you is always great. Hats, scarves, jewelry are great for details!
The only thing I suggest avoiding are apple watches!
I totally suggest bringing 3-4 options! This way we can mix and match to find the best engagement photo outfit based on your location and lighting! By bringing a hand full of option we will have a really great chance of finding the outfit you LOVE!
An important thing to remember is that not all locations will allow for a private changing area. If you aren’t comfortable in these situations so we can plan ahead!
Remember these outfits should be make you feel confident, comfortable, and don’t take away from the emotion! Have fun and be creative! And as always, please reach out to your engagement photographer! I am always more than happy to help my couples!
