There are wedding days that are beautiful because every detail has been carefully planned.

And then there are wedding days that are beautiful because the people are so completely themselves.

Abby and Cam’s wedding at Pilgrim Cove in McCall, Idaho, was the latter.

From sharing private vows on the dock that morning to jumping straight into the lake together, walking down the aisle with their dogs, and dancing like no one else existed, their wedding day was full of the kind of moments that can’t really be planned.

Before the wedding, Abby and Cam told me they wanted their photographs to feel natural. More than anything, they wanted to be able to look through their photographs in their 70s and 80s and still feel all the love and happiness of this day.

After spending the day with them, I completely understood why.

A Wedding Day That Was Completely Their Own

Abby and Cam weren’t interested in following a wedding-day formula just because it was traditional.

They wanted their wedding to feel like them.

Their dogs are a huge part of their lives, so naturally, their dogs were part of the wedding day too. Cam walked down the aisle with them rather than having his parents accompany him.

It was one of those moments that made perfect sense once you knew them.

And that, to me, is what makes a wedding memorable.

Not whether you followed every tradition correctly, but whether you made space for the things that actually matter to you.

Private Vows on the Dock

One of my favorite parts of Abby and Cam’s entire wedding day happened before the ceremony even began.

That morning, the two of them met privately on the dock to exchange vows.

No crowd.

No aisle.

No audience.

Just the two of them, the lake, and the promises they were making to each other.

And then they jumped into the lake.

Because, of course they did.

There was something so perfect about that moment.

They weren’t waiting for the “right” part of the wedding day to start living it.

They were already in it.

The lake, the morning light, the laughter, the jumping in—it felt spontaneous and completely authentic to them.

And those are exactly the kinds of moments I want my couples to have photographs of.

The People Who Make a Wedding a Wedding

When Abby and Cam talked about what they wanted from their photographs, they kept coming back to their people.

They wanted to remember the love and happiness of having their favorite people all together.

And looking through their wedding, that’s everywhere.

The hugs.

The laughter.

The friends squeezed together.

The people watching from the sidelines.

The moments happening between the moments.

There was so much life happening around them that I didn’t want to interrupt it.

I wanted to let it unfold.

That’s one of my favorite things about documentary-style wedding photography. The goal isn’t to manufacture emotion. It’s to notice it when it happens.

When the Dogs Came Down the Aisle

Of course, their dogs had to be part of the ceremony.

They aren’t simply pets to Abby and Cam. They’re family.

One of their dogs is disabled, and Cam adopted him knowing that he would require extra care. He has spent years training, caring for, and loving him deeply.

So when Cam walked down the aisle with his dogs, it felt like much more than a cute wedding detail.

It was a reflection of the life they’re building together and the things they choose to make room for.

That is what I love about photographing weddings.

The details that matter most aren’t always the ones listed on the wedding timeline.

Sometimes they’re the things that tell you who these people really are.

And Then They Danced

If I had to choose one moment from Abby and Cam’s wedding that stays with me most, it would be watching them dance.

There was a moment when I looked at Cam and felt this overwhelming sense of love coming from him toward Abby.

He was completely immersed in her.

He wasn’t thinking about the camera.

He wasn’t thinking about anyone watching.

He was just so happy to be there with her.

And that’s the photograph I want for my couples.

Not necessarily the perfectly posed portrait where everyone looks flawless.

The photograph where you can look at your partner years from now and think:

That’s exactly how I felt.

A Celebration Full of Life

The rest of the day was exactly what you’d hope a wedding celebration would be, full of people, movement, laughter, dancing, and a whole lot of joy.

The reception at Pilgrim Cove felt alive.

There were quiet moments tucked between the chaos, huge bursts of energy on the dance floor, and all of the little interactions that make a wedding feel like a real gathering rather than a production.

And I think that’s what makes the photographs feel timeless.

Not because everything was perfect.

Because everything was real.

Photographs You’ll Still Feel Decades From Now

Abby and Cam told me they wanted to be able to look at their photographs in their 70s and 80s and still feel the love and happiness of their wedding day.

I think that’s one of the most beautiful reasons to have your wedding photographed.

Because photographs aren’t only about remembering what something looked like.

They’re about remembering how it felt to be there.

The cold water of the lake.

The sound of your friends laughing.

The feeling of your dog’s leash in your hand as you walk down the aisle.

The way your partner looked at you during your first dance.

The people who surrounded you when you promised to spend your life together.

Those are the things that become more precious with time.

And those are the things I want to photograph.

Abby and Cam, thank you for trusting me to document a day that was so completely, wonderfully you.

I hope when you’re 80 years old, you can look through these photographs and feel every bit of it all over again.
