There are some wedding days that feel less like an event and more like a gathering of a life already beautifully lived.
For Molly and Gabe, that meant returning to Lake Pend Oreille—a place that has been part of Molly’s story for years and remains her favorite place in the world. With her grandmother’s home overlooking the lake as their reception setting, a vintage dress thrifted by Molly, flowers overflowing from every corner, and the people they love gathered together, their wedding day felt deeply personal from beginning to end.
It was dreamy and vintage-inspired, but still fresh. Beautiful without feeling overly formal. And most importantly, it felt completely like them.
A Love Story That Led Them Back West
Molly and Gabe met while attending school in Ashland, Oregon, and have been together for a little over five years.
Their life together has taken them across the country. About three years ago, they moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where Molly works in cancer research and Gabe teaches. But their hearts have always remained connected to the West.
Molly grew up in Idaho, while Gabe is originally from California. They share a love of hiking, traveling, trying new restaurants, coffee, pastries, and wandering farmers markets. Gabe is a runner, Molly loves to sew and make things, and together they’ve built a life full of little rituals and adventures.
Gabe proposed on a hike at Schweitzer Mountain while the two were visiting Sandpoint—a fitting beginning to a wedding that would eventually bring them back to one of the places they love most.
Lake Pend Oreille, A Place That Already Felt Like Home
Choosing Lake Pend Oreille wasn’t really a question.
It is Molly’s favorite place in the world, and her grandmother’s home has been part of that connection for years. The house, which Molly’s grandmother built in the 1980s, became the setting for their reception.
Their ceremony took place less than half a mile away at a family friend’s property before everyone gathered at the house to celebrate.
There was something especially meaningful about having their wedding in a place that already carried so much family history.
Rather than choosing a traditional wedding venue, Molly and Gabe created something that felt more personal: a beautiful backyard gathering at a place that mattered to them.
And it was stunning.
A Wedding That Felt Like Them
Before their wedding, Molly told me that they envisioned something vintage-y, dreamy, but still fresh.
They were drawn to documentary-style photography because they wanted their photographs to preserve more than what the day looked like.
They wanted to remember what it felt like.
The atmosphere.
The people.
The emotion.
The feeling of having everyone they love in one place.
That intention was present throughout the entire day.
There wasn’t a need to force every moment into a traditional wedding-day formula. Instead, the day had room to breathe. Friends gathered. Family celebrated. People laughed and hugged and moved between the ceremony, the lake, the house, the dinner table and the dance floor.
The result was a wedding that felt elevated without ever feeling overly produced.
The Details Were Beautifully Intentional
One of my favorite things about this wedding was how effortlessly all of the details worked together.
The flowers by Blod Blooms Design Co. completely transformed the spaces, bringing an abundance of texture and romance while still feeling natural to the setting.
Every detail felt considered without losing the warmth of being at home.
It was the kind of wedding where the setting itself became part of the design.
The lake.
The old family home.
The flowers.
The vintage touches.
The people.
Nothing felt like it was trying too hard to be beautiful—and somehow that made it even more beautiful.
The Heart of the Day
There is something I love about photographing weddings where the people matter more than the production.
Molly and Gabe’s day had plenty of beautiful details, but the moments I keep coming back to are the ones where you can feel how much these two people are loved.
Their friends and family were completely present with them.
There was so much warmth and acceptance throughout the day, and their celebration brought together a community that felt genuinely joyful to be around.
That is one of the reasons I love documentary wedding photography.
I’m not interested in creating a perfect version of your wedding day.
I’m interested in noticing the real one.
The hug that lasts a little longer.
The person laughing in the background.
The look between two people who have forgotten anyone else is watching.
The way your friends gather around you.
The moments you didn’t know were happening until you see them in a photograph years later.
Those are the photographs that become more valuable with time.
And Then Came the Huckleberry
After their ceremony, Molly changed into a vintage gown she had thrifted.
Then the two of them climbed aboard their family’s boat, the Huckleberry, and headed out onto Lake Pend Oreille.
Molly drove them across the water.
And honestly, I don’t think we could have dreamed up a better ending to their wedding day.
After a day filled with family, flowers, beautiful details and celebration, they simply disappeared onto the lake together.
It was playful.
It was nostalgic.
It was wildly personal.
And it was so completely Molly and Gabe.
Photographs to Come Back To
Before their wedding, Molly shared something with me that has stayed with me.
She told me that she has always loved looking through old wedding photographs because they hold so much emotion, atmosphere and story.
She wanted photographs they could return to for years—to remember not only what happened, but what it felt like to have all the people they love gathered together.
That is exactly why I believe wedding photography matters.
Years from now, the flowers won’t be here.
The dinner will be gone.
The music will have stopped.
The boat will have returned to the dock.
But these photographs will still hold a little piece of that day.
They’ll bring you back to the lake.
Back to the people you love.
Back to the way you felt standing beside your person.
And hopefully, back to the feeling of being completely, wonderfully present in your own life.
